Description
Harmony is something everyone wants to add beautifully, but when you actually try it yourself, it often sounds awkward or dissonant.
I experienced the same.
I loved covers, but I thought it would be difficult to differentiate myself from others with just tone color or vocalization. So I started looking for my own weapon, and in the process, I became fascinated by the charm of vocal harmony.
At first, I searched YouTube for 'how to build harmonies.' The explanation I found was simple.
"Just stack a third interval, like stacking E and G above C."
At first, it felt very simple. Actually stacking a few notes produced quite plausible results.
However, as I applied this to actual songs, new problems appeared. There was an awkwardness that could not be solved by simply stacking harmonies at third intervals, and it was difficult to find clear explanations about the reasons and solutions.
Furthermore, it was not easy to find systematic materials explaining the principles behind the rich and creative harmonies used by professional singers.
"Then, is there a way to understand vocal harmony more systematically and apply it flexibly to various situations?"
Starting from this question, I began researching harmonies myself, studying music theory, and recording directly to organize the knowledge and know-how I gained. Over several years, I systematized this research and experience into one document over about a year.
This document is the resulting Vocal Harmony Mastery beginner's guide.
It classifies and explains various forms of vocal harmony, which were difficult to cover clearly in existing music theory, in an easy-to-understand way. It also includes actual music examples from over 200 songs in Korean popular music, J-Pop, Pop, and more, allowing you to see how to apply theory to real songs.
This resource is broadly useful for those who cannot read sheet music or are new to harmony, as well as those who already know how to build harmonies but want to learn more diverse expressions.
It is especially recommended for the following people.
- Those who want to create their own vocal harmonies while doing singing broadcasts or cover uploads
- Those who want to use harmonies more effectively in vocal editing and mixing work
- Those who want to create more diverse and refined harmonies than before in harmony guide commission work
- Those who want to deepen their understanding and appreciation of music by learning the principles behind different types of vocal harmonies
Harmony is not simply adding fixed notes on top of a melody. Understanding the principles allows you to create much more diverse expressions even with the same melody.
I hope this document will be a solid first step for those starting with harmony and a chance to discover new possibilities for those already using harmony.
